Match Report

Match Report, Stanway Rovers 2 Coggeshall Town 0,
9th March 2024. Essex Senior League, Premier Division.

Although Coggeshall kicked off, Stanway soon gained possession and won a corner in the first minute, which was headed over the bar.  They soon had another, which after playing it short, was wide of the goal.  Dev Bhamra made a good save in parrying a shot from Joe Debell, which was put out for a throw in. A Coggeshall long ball to Izaih Antoine saw Callum Robinson, the Stanway keeper come out of the area to kick to safety and a Stanway long ball was headed clear, but straight to Debell, who’s shot was well wide.  Antoine, Nathan Dennis, and Lester Ward combined well down their left, but Antoine’s shot was wide.  Antoine was again put through with Robinson again being first to the ball, soon after he won a corner, which was cleared, to Jack Hauser who saw his effort saved by Robinson.

Jack Wilson was shown a yellow card for a foul on Jose De La Paz wide on the right and Tom Maycock put the resultant free kick out for a goal kick.  Dennis, having received the ball from Alfie Gilbey, sent over a cross, but it was too long for Antoine.  A through ball to George Okoye saw him face a one on one with Bhamra, but his left foot shot cannoned off the crossbar.  Stanway pressurised Coggeshall in first half stoppage time as Maycock had a shot saved, Conor Tyrell blocked a La Paz cross out for a corner and then sent a cross/shot from Jamie Bennett out for another corner.  From the long corner, Debell headed back across the goal and Reece Conway volleyed an unstoppable shot past Bhamrato give Stanway the lead four minutes into stoppage time.

Half time: Stanway Rovers 1 v Coggeshall Town 0

Stanway continued where they left off getting a corner in the first minute and four minutes later a low cross from their right left Bennett only needing to tap in for their second goal.  Gilbey was sent to the sin bin before the restart, presumably for comments to the referee.  Dennis then Roy Stevens both sent crosses wide before Bennett struck the Coggeshall crossbar, which went for a goal kick.  Ward and          Theo Duffin saw their efforts blocked, Duffin’s for a corner.  Bennett sent over a dangerous cross that no one could get to, and then had his shot blocked and Maycock, having been put through was tackled successfully by Ward.

With 30 minutes, remaining Stanway took off La Paz and Ricky Tarbard, bringing on Max Sherlock and ex Seedgrower, Milo Grimes.  Coggeshall followed with substitutions on 66 minutes, Finn Wilkes and Reggie Gregory replacing Hauser and Stevens.  Stanwaycontinued the spate of substitutions when Freddie Cooper, Conway and Maycock saw Tyler Corlett, another ex Seedgrower, Junior Mubiayi and Harry Thomas replace them.  Okoye and Mubiayi had shots at goal, their efforts being wide or saved by Bhamra.  Duffin injured himself in a tackle, it looked like hamstring problems, and although he carried on for a while, he went off to be replaced by Tayo Adedoja.  Dennis was fouled on the edge of the penalty area by Debell, who was shown a yellow card, but the resultant free kick was headed wide by Wilson.  Into stoppage, time and Bhamra saved at the feet of Thomas and at the other end a Tyrrell effort from a cross by Adedoja went over the bar.  Mubiayi was sin binned and the match ended after a shot from Sherlock went wide of the goal.
